Prof. Ghafoor Ahmad
Naib Ameer (Vice President)
One of the most respected politician in Pakistan, Prof Ghafoor Ahmad was born in Baraily,
U.P. (India) on 26th June, 1927. He got Masters degree in Commerce from the University of
Lucknow in 1948. Later, he also completed the course of Industrial Accounts and became
fellow of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan.
Besides
working in commercial organizations he also taught in various institutions. These include
Institute of Chartered Accountants, Pakistan Institute of Industrial Accounts, Jinnah
Institute of Industrial Accounts, and Urdu College, Karachi. Because of his interest and
involvement in educational activities, he remained for several years member of Syllabus
Committee of Sind University and Karachi University as well as Sind University Board for
Commerce. |

Prof Ghafoor Ahmad became
member (rukn) of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in 1950 when he was only 23. He
served as Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Karachi Branch for several years, and has mow
been serving as Naib Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan since quite long. He took
very active part in politics right from the very beginning. To begin with he was elected a
member of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in 1958. He was later elected member of the
National Assembly of Pakistan from Karachi in 1970, then again in 1977. He was
Parliamentary Leader of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1972-77 Assembly. He served as Secretary
General of the United Democratic Front (UDF) during 1972-77 as well as Secretary General
of the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA) during 1977-78. He was also a member of the PNA
team that undertook crucial negotiation with Mr Z.A.Bhutto, before the 1977 Martial Law
was imposed.
He served as Federal
Minister for Industries during 1978-79, reluctantly though, but submitting to the commands
of the party and the Alliance (PNA). He later served as Secretary General, Islami
Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) during 1988-92. During his long period career, he was arrested
several times - the longest (nine months) being the period when Jamaat-e-Islami was
banned in 1964. He was released when the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami was lifted by the
Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Prof Ghafoor Ahmad is the
author of five books dealing with the political developments in Pakistan. He is highly
respected in every political circle for his friendly manners and cool democratic approach.
