Pneumonia cases increasing in quake hit areas

Lahore, Dec. 2: In view of increasing number of patients of chest and respiratory system diseases a Chest Ward has been set up at the PIMA and Al-Khidmat Foundation field hospital at Beela Noor Shah, in Muzafarabad. Fourteen children suffering from pneumonia are being treated at the hospital while 140 people suffering from respiratory and chest diseases have been treated during the last one week. According to Hospital coordinator Dr Hafeez, there is 40 per cent increase in OPD patients following the recent rain and snowfall. He said the OPD patients whose initial number was around 1300 per day after the earthquake and had reduced to 650 daily in the last few weeks, has now again rose to 1100 per day.

He said 13 patients of hypothermia have also been treated at the hospital, while most of the people coming to hospital lack proper warm clothing and shelter to survive under the extreme cold weather. He said spread of pneumonia could not be prevented under the prevailing conditions where people lack proper warm clothes, shelter and adequate nourishment. He said he is expecting further increase in OPD patients which require more lady doctors, anesthetists and X-ray machine immediately.
