Musharraf soothing US by scarping Hudood laws: JI shoora

Lahore, Nov 6: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan has termed the women protection bill (WPB) an anti-religion enactment seeking to appease the USA. It demanded for its immediate withdrawal and also warned if detention of Dr. Abdul Qadir led to loss of his life, no one could save the rulers from the wrath of Pakistani people. Islamabad's insistence on the military solution of Balochistan problem proves that the government is fulfilling the agenda of anti-Pakistan and Islam forces in the strategically important region of the country.

These views were expressed by the central shoora of Jamaat-e-Islami in three separate resolutions on amendments in Hudood laws, Dr. Abdul Qadir and Balochistan issue. The apex policy meeting body of the party is in session since Nov 4 at JI headquarters Mansoorah. Qazi Hussain Ahmad presided over the Monday session which adopted the numerous other resolutions.

On Hudood Laws

In a detailed resolution on Hudood laws the JI shoora pointed out that various amendments in the name of women protection bill were being made in line with the US dictates available on the state department website. The US foreign office, the resolution added, had demanded to scrap Islamic laws in its website six months ago. The meeting also deplored adoption of select committee approved bill for voting in the National Assembly [on Nov 10] while Ulema committee had proposed eight amendments in the select committee bill for bringing it in conformity with the Islamic norms.

Highlighting clause-wise flaws in the select committee women protection bill the JI resolution observed that even no non-Muslims living in Pakistan can endorse the changes in the government sponsored bill. The shoora deplored restoration of repealed provisions of 1979 Pakistan Penal Code to protect the criminals involved in the offences likes abduction etc in the WPB.

The meeting opined that 1979 Hudood Ordinance is not repugnant to Quran and Sunnah therefore every faithful should mobilize all available resources to protect it. The shoora categorically maintained that entire WPB is in conflict with the teaching of Quran. The shoora appealed religious, political parties, human rights and social welfare institutions to play their active role in the withdrawal of WPB so that honor of women folk is protected.

On Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan

The shoora meeting also expressed grave concern over the deteriorating health of national hero Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan who made our defense impregnable. It noted with great concern that private doctor facility has been withdrawn from detained hero which augment the fear of his family that rulers want Dr. Abdul Qadir to die in detention. The JI resolution warned the rulers of dire consequences saying: "if any loss hit Dr. Qadir in detention then no one could save the rulers from wrath of masses."

On Balochistan

A separate resolution on Balochistan inked a detailed recipe of how to tackle the deprived provinces of Pakistan with special emphasis on the equal distribution of resources among the federating units of Pakistan. The JI resolution took serious notice of ignoring the local residents of Balochistan in the execution of mega projects like development of Gawadar and forcibly acquiring their land for such mega projects without proper compensation. The JI shoora was of the view that denial to economic and political justice had always been root cause of hatred and biases which always affected peaceful co-existence in the past.

The resolution believed that immediate cessation of army operation, production of political detainees and release of innocent people could make the situation conducive for talk. Closing the doors of talk on elected political representatives, extra judicial killing of tribal leaders, kidnapping of scores of people by sleuths of official agencies and without charge detention, free movement by agents of enemies coinciding with the publication of maps of independent Balochistan in US papers strengthen our fear that the sitting army junta is following footsteps of its predecessors and is leading the country towards disintegration in line with the Americans plans.

It urged the masses to increase pressure on the authorities to fulfill provincial needs besides making an earnest appeal to act upon the proposals of parliamentary committee. The resolution demanded that Balochistan should be given more representation in the committee so that intra-provincial discord comes to end and the federation is made strong.
