Karachi violence is linked with AG-Altaf meeting in London: Qazi

LAHORE, Apr 9: Jamaat-e-Islami ameer and MMA president Qazi Hussain Ahmad has strongly condemned the violence that broke out in Karachi on Wednesday, saying the sudden violence after manhandling of Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Dr Sher Afgan Niazi is part of the same conspiracy.

In a statement on Wednesday, Qazi Hussain Ahmad said the sudden violence in Karachi after the meeting of Attorney General with MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London was meaningful and indicated towards a deep conspiracy. He alleged that Gen Musharraf and his allies are trying to destabilize the country's situation to fail the new democratic government and prevent it from restoring the judges illegally sacked by Gen Musharraf.

Qazi expressed sorrow that events of carnage of May 12, 07 in Karachi are being repeated again, and dozens of armed assailants are roaming in the city committing arson, opening fire upon innocent citizens and destroying public and private properties while the city administration is acting as silent spectators. He said the conspiracy of manhandling of Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Dr Sher Afgan and violence in Karachi are aimed at pushing the public demands of restoration of judges and release of Dr Qadeer Khan in the background.

He demanded immediate impartial inquiry into the series of events over the last two days and expose those elements behind them. He warned that certain elements are out to sabotage the lawyers movement for the restoration of judiciary. He also demanded of the politicians and workers to learn from the past and avoid accusing one another to display tolerance and respect of difference of opinion.

Responding to the allegations by Dr Sher Afgan in which he had accused Jamaat-e-Islami of being involved in torture upon him, Qazi said JI had nothing to do with his manhandling and had already condemned the incident. Dr Niazi should have first confirmed the facts before leveling baseless accusations on the party since he had weakened his case by involving JI in it.

He asked the president Supreme Court Bar Association Aitzaz Ahsan to reverse his decision to resign as president, and instead work for frustrating the conspiracy to sabotage the lawyers movement by making lawyers' groups fight against one another on the basis of regionalism and ethnicity. He stressed the unity of lawyers was necessary to take the movement to logical conclusion.
