LAHORE, Mar 25: Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Syed
Munawar Hasan has criticized Washington for pressurizing the nascent
democratic set up in Pakistan for serving her own ends and ensuring
a continuation of Gen Musharraf in presidency.
He was addressing a training workshop of JI office bearers at
Qurtaba on Tuesday, says a press release by JI Media Cell.
Munawar Hasan condemned the sudden visit of US foreign under
secretaries John Negroponte and Richard Boucher to Islamabad and
meetings with senior political leaders and government officials. He
said Washington is constantly pressurizing the new democratic set up
to maintain its stronghold on Islamabad administration and smooth
working environment for Gen Musharraf.
He expressed sorrow that the champions of democracy have no
tolerance for an independent democratic set up and were continuously
working to dictate their terms to the new Islamabad authorities. He
said Washington is particularly concerned with the possible reversal
Islamabad's policies towards blind support to the war against
terror, and feared that its plans of longer fight between Pakistani
people and army might be thwarted along with the wishes to control
Islamabad's nuclear assets. He said Washington also feared
restoration of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri and other
independent judges of the supreme court which could block her free
access to entire Pakistani administration and length and breadth of
the territories.
Munawar said US officials have been visiting Islamabad uninvited
almost every day since Feb 18 for seeking assurances from the new
government's leaders to continue Washington dictated policies in
Pakistan. He reminded that the results of the Feb 18 polls showed
clearly that people of Pakistan wants to get rid of Washington's
terrorism on Pakistani territory, while Washington has started
believing and treating Pakistan as its own state.
He expressed sorrow that Gen Musharraf and his cronies have debased
Pakistan's sovereignty and dignity by slavish policies for
Washington over the last eight years. He demanded of the new
government to display courage and self respect by saying a clear
'No' to Washington's humiliating demands and dictations.
