Syed Munawar Hasan suspects government's sincerity to restore deposed judges

LAHORE, May 20: Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Syed Munawar Hasan has said that the statement of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani that "another chief justice could not be appointed in the presence of the incumbent" has made it clear that PPP do not want to restore judiciary led by chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhri and want to keep the PCO chief justice.

In a statement on Tuesday, Munawar Hasan said there is only one chief justice but the one unconstitutionally occupying this office will have to be removed. He warned that masses and the lawyers who have waged a glorious struggle for the independence of the judiciary will never accept any cut in the powers and tenure of the chief justice. He further warned that any indemnity to the unconstitutional measures of Gen Musharraf on Nov 3, 07 and amendment in Article 6 in the proposed 18th amendment would be an open treason with the constitution. He said PPP seems to be implementing Musharraf's agenda in toto which may invite masses' wrath and its power may go early.
