Question:
Jamaats statements
and its Ameer's visits to the Presidency before the elections indicated that the party had
good opinion about President Farooq Leghari..... Later the interim government was
instituted and actions initiated about accountability. How, with reference to
accountability and the Pakistan politics, the party finds President Leghari now?
Answer:
We demanded the President
to undertake "Ehtesab". Before November 1996, we told him that the Peoples
Party government had lost public mandate. The loot and plunder had reached the level that
there was no justification for Benazir and its government to stay in power. It was also
suggested that an interim government should be instituted which conforms the requirements
of article 62 and 63. The President dismissed the corrupt PPP government, but he could not
properly discharge his constitutional duty and was himself facing the shots. It was the
result of rejecting our advice. Jamaat-e-Islami believes Mr. Leghari lost a golden chance
and the nation was back in the mid of a crisis. Having lost an historic opportunity, the
President, in our opinion, had proved himself to be a weak person.
