Application of Shari'ah

Question:

How application of Sharia in a Muslim country like Pakistan can change the reality on the ground, in other words how can the standard of living of the people will be raised, how the hegemonistic design of India can be changed with the application of Sharia. Can this Sharia be molded to meet the requirements of today's complex World, do you think that Ulemas have been given authority to mould the Sahria as required to run a just society? Do you think Islam is a flexible religion or it is a rigid and strict religion and the laws of Islam which are given and prescribed in Quran are the last word in the sense that no men can no matter how learned that men may be can not consult and revise the Sharia, right?. I like to have your response and see your reasoning on this subject.

Shuja, U.S.A.

Answer:

Assalam-o-Alaikum dear Mr. Shuja, thank you for contacting JI.

While speaking of enforcing Shari'ah, we mean to initiate with firm belief and conviction that Islam was a complete way of life that covered every aspect and dimension of human life and activity - moral and material, spiritual and mundane, individual and social, educational and cultural, economic and political, national and international.

The very term Islam stands for peace, attained through submission to the Divine will. Individual and society both are required to conform to the values and principles given in the Qur’an and Sunnah - the permanent sources of Islam, together providing Shari'ah. Moral purification, spiritual sublimity, knowledge, character, discipline and individual and collective efforts, are the way to achieve this life of submission, which ensures peace within man’s soul, peace between human beings, peace between humans and the universe and ultimately, peace between man and his Creator, the Master - Allah (Salawatullah-e-Ta‘lah.

No doubt, much depends on the sincerity and commitment of the individuals and groups that strive for such holistic structural change. Islam stands for social reformation, economic progress and political growth that ensure the establishment of a just, human and pluralistic society. We aim just at that.

No sane person can contest the type of change and the integrated approach through a fully committed group, as Islam presents and as briefly noted above. The basic sources of this Divine (sanctioned) Scheme also provide ample flexibility and modes of adaptation, to suit to every emerging situation at any stage of human development. We have no doubt about it and will - inshaAllah - prove it, when we have the chance, with popular support. Meanwhile, we are attempting to impress every Muslim that he/she was duty bound to join this effort.

Wassalam,

M. Haq
