Multan – August 9: Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has vowed to resist the erosion of democracy and theft of people’s rights, announcing that JI’s November gathering will spark a nationwide movement for public rights.
Speaking at a press conference in Multan on Saturday, Rehman highlighted the severe hardships faced by the people of southern Punjab—especially small farmers—citing agricultural collapse, lack of women’s development programs, and the deteriorating state of education for children from poor and middle-class families.
“No political party, apart from the JI is raising its voice for the public.”
Before the November 21–23 public gathering, he said, the JI will establish over 30,000 people’s committees. The committees, he added, will be instrumental ij launching an organized struggle.
The government , said the JI leader, has failed to address energy crisis.
Pakistan could produce 46,000 MW against a national demand of around 30,000 MW, yet people face load shedding, he said. The government has, he said, robbed people of Rs 300 billion through over-billing. He said “Farmers are unable to access fertilisers, wheat prices have not been fixed and sugarcane remains unsold.”
He said ruling families owning sugar mills refuse to pay farmers their due. The Punjab government, said Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, betrayed small farmers, givingprivileges to feudal who even evade taxes.
Rehman condemned the class-based system of education, pointing out that 27 million children are out of school. The Punjab government, on the other hand, planned to hand schools over to contractors, he said. The JI leader said the government denied labour rights to over 90 percent working class. The judicial system, he said, has been rendered dysfunctional.
“The country is under mafia rule with a contractor-style governance system,” he said, highlighting the need for a peaceful resistance movement to bring the real change.
On Gaza, the JI chief said Pakistan will not turn a blind eye to the suffering of Palestinians despite its own crises. He urged Muslim rulers to stand united for Palestine, asserting that if they did so, no one could harm Muslim children. He also said the influence Pakistan gained after its war with India should be used to support Palestine. He also reaffirmed JI’s support for Kashmir cause.
