Lahore: August 2–Jamaat-e-Islami Vice-Emir Liaqat Baloch has called on the federal government to issue notifications for the implementation of the three key demands accepted during negotiations with the JI committee of the Haq Do Balochistan Long March. He also urged the government to announce, within the next ten days, the formation of a multi-stakeholder committee to advance progress on the remaining demands.
Addressing a joint press conference at Mansoora alongside Jamaat-e-Islami Balochistan Emir Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman Baloch on Saturday, he stressed that Jamaat-e-Islami would propose names of opposition lawmakers from Balochistan for inclusion in the proposed committee.
Informing journalists about the progress made during negotiations held last night between Jamaat-e-Islami and federal ministers, Baloch expressed satisfaction that the government had acknowledged the legitimacy of all demands and committed to their implementation.
Speaking at the event, Hidayat ur Rehman Baloch stated that the government now has six months to fulfill the agreed demands. During this period, Jamaat-e-Islami and the Haq Do Movement will expand their organizational efforts across Balochistan. Should the issues remain unresolved, he warned, a fresh long march towards Islamabad would be launched. He also thanked the people of Punjab for their hospitality and respect shown towards march participants, and lauded the media for its positive coverage.
The negotiations were led by Liaqat Baloch on behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami and included talks with federal ministers and senior government officials such as Rana Sanaullah, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Atta Tarar, and Talal Chaudhry. Jamaat-e-Islami presented eight demands, of which three were agreed upon. For the remaining points, it was decided that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would, within ten days, notify a committee comprising all relevant Balochistan stakeholders to prepare actionable solutions to the province’s long-standing issues.
Liaqat Baloch, Hidayat ur Rehman and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry were appointed the focal person for future talks.
Liaqat Baloch further elaborated that the government had agreed to reopen border trade routes from Chaman to Gwadar, issue a notification mandating dignified treatment of civilians at security checkpoints in Balochistan, and ensure local fishermen in Gwadar are allowed to fish under legal protections while curbing the activities of illegal trawlers. He also expressed hope that during the visit of the Iranian President to Pakistan, the government would announce the resumption of border trade and progress on the long-stalled Pak-Iran gas pipeline project.
Baloch highlighted that the JI delegation had also visited on Friday the sit-in staged by Baloch women in Islamabad and called upon the government to seriously consider their demands and address their grievances.
Reaffirming JI’s commitment to peaceful democratic struggle, Baloch praised the determination and resolve of the long march participants and congratulated them on their success.
