Islamabad, March 5: Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday and urged Islamabad to work with Muslim countries to play a proactive role in ending tensions following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
During the meeting at the Prime Minister House, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman also stressed the need to resolve the ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, saying the situation between the two neighbouring countries and the escalating crisis surrounding Iran have direct implications for Pakistan’s national security.
The delegation-level meeting between the prime minister and the Jamaat-e-Islami chief lasted for about an hour.
The Jamaat-e-Islami delegation included Vice Emir Liaquat Baloch, Mian Muhammad Aslam, and Director Foreign Affairs Asif Luqman Qazi. The government side comprised Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Attaullah Tarar, Rana Mubashir Iqbal, Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry.
According to details, the in-camera meeting discussed the regional situation, tensions arising after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, the growing strain in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, issues related to Balochistan, and the public burden caused by high electricity bills linked to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) agreements.
Presenting Jamaat-e-Islami’s viewpoint, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said Pakistan should play an active diplomatic role in promoting peace and stability in the region. He said that after the tensions with Afghanistan and the attacks on Iran, the Muslim world must adopt a responsible approach to prevent further escalation.
He added that Pakistan enjoys brotherly relations with both Iran and Afghanistan and should enhance diplomatic engagement with the two countries to help restore peace in the region.
Members of the government delegation briefed the Jamaat-e-Islami chief on Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and measures taken by Pakistani embassies in Iran and Gulf countries to facilitate Pakistani nationals.
Separately, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman also met Qatar’s Ambassador to Pakistan Ali bin Mubarak Al Khater at the Qatari embassy in Islamabad. Jamaat-e-Islami Director Foreign Affairs Asif Luqman Qazi was also present during the meeting.
The two sides discussed the recent tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the regional situation after the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, and the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan are harmful for regional peace and stressed that Muslim countries should resolve disputes through dialogue.
He also appreciated Qatar’s past diplomatic role regarding Gaza and Afghanistan, saying it enhanced Qatar’s global standing. He expressed hope that Doha would play a conciliatory role in easing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan and called for further strengthening economic relations between Pakistan and Qatar.
Qatar’s Ambassador Ali bin Mubarak Al Khater said his country attaches great importance to relations with Pakistan and is keen to expand economic cooperation between the two countries.
